Children
Can I have Children?
You can always have a family, but you will build your family differently from how your parents built their family.
We who have androgen insensitivity syndrome are unable to bear or conceive children. That does not stop us from having families and children through fostering, adoption, or medical advancements.
I want to bear my own child.
At first, the concept of adoption may seem strange, but think of it this way: when you met your partner, you made a commitment to each other to be together. The two of you are not related by blood, yet you are bonded by something deeper – love, trust, and choice. Your children will be no different. Your family will be made by choice and will be all the stronger for it. Your child will be wanted, needed, and worked for. They will be chosen, and you will love them stronger than you even knew that you could love.
What if I don’t want to have children?
It is perfectly valid to not want children. Many people feel the need to tell you that your life is not “perfect” or “complete” until you have had children, and this is particularly painful when you are unable to have children. I believe that you are capable of self fulfillment without the need for heirs. Believe in yourself, as I believe in you, and be the extraordinary person I know you are, and remain confident in your decision!
